Update on the Jefferson Church trip

Below is an update from Shawn Farrell, who oversees our high school ministry.

The Jefferson team is home. A group of 15 Fusion people (led by Jonas Tracy and Tony Miller) and 14 HS students (led by Jimmy Apodaca and Shawn Farrell) spent the weekend in downtown Los Angeles ministering to the community at the Jefferson Church.  This is an urban church located right outside of USC in a very low income neighborhood. The church is predominately Hispanic with 2/3 being bilingual and 1/3 speaking Spanish only.  Brodie McClain’s family (he is the pastor) is one of the only white families in the neighborhood. Reflections: Grace Through the Spirit

In the beginning of his sermon on Sunday, Chris asked us whether we needed to work more on pursuing grace or pursuing truth in our relationships. I knew instantly which one I needed more of: grace. I knew because Chris said one indication of where our hearts are is how we deal with those we see as having incorrect doctrine. I had just had a conversation about a famous pastor of another church and my disgust at the way he handles the Scripture and steers his congregation.

Knowing my heart, I have to admit that there was little grace toward him in that conversation. And I certainly wasn’t acting “kind,” “patient” or “with gentleness” the way we are encouraged to in 2 Timothy 2:24. How could I? This pastor had affected some people close to me, and I found none of those things in my heart whenever I thought of him. Continue Reading →

Pictures from L.A. Trip to Jefferson Church

More pictures will come, but here is a little snapshot of what some of our high schoolers, young marrieds and other FBCers were up to this weekend at the Jefferson Church in Los Angeles. Thank you to Stephany Perez for taking all of these!

On Sunday morning, everyone worked together to help put on a church service, complete with two sermons (one in English by Jimmy, another in Spanish by Danny), music and childcare.

Afterward, some worked on the mural on the outside of the building, while others went out to hand out fliers for the toy sale/dinner on Sunday night.

Later that night, the team served dinner, helped with the toy sale and continued to work on the mural. The turnout was even bigger than expected! Praise God!

Everyone at the end of the night in front of the mural:

And here’s a brief video of the mural.

“Madam, teach him to deny himself”

The General of the Confederate Army, Robert E. Lee (the statue in the picture is of him), was a man of honor and integrity, and he is known as one of the greatest leaders in all of American history.  He had a particular abhorrence of selfishness that found its foundation in following after his Master, Jesus Christ.  After the Civil War when a mother asked him what would be the greatest instruction she could give her infant son, his reply was, “Madam, teach him to deny himself.”

Those words resonate from our Lord as he too instructed that “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). Continue Reading →

Shepherd My Heart MY Way!

Who's in Charge?I’m not sure what I had in mind when I thought of my husband, Daniel, leading me spiritually. I guess I imagined a detailed Bible study plan with a specific time set apart for us to study together. Over time my expectations continued to drop until I was sure he was incapable of leading me. I’m sure a lot of wives have felt this way; we have a godly desire for our husbands to lead our families, but we sinfully grow discontent when our husbands don’t lead our families.

The discontentment I felt reminded me of our first year of marriage. We were both new believers, and Daniel refused to lead our family in the way I thought he should. Did you catch that? I wanted him to lead but only if it aligned with the way I thought things should go! After all, it’s all about me, right? Continue Reading →
