Reflections: Lessons on Failure

CC image by slgckgc on Flickr

Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies. Since I started cooking, some dishes have turned out beautifully, while others… not so much. In those moments of failure, it would be quite an encouragement to know that celebrity chefs like Wolfgang Puck or Cat Cora had burnt a soufflé or two in their lifetimes (although I have never heard them admit to such failure).

Listening to Chris introduce the gospel of Mark on Sunday, he asked “What will the gospel MAKE of me?”  Like world-renowned chefs, the writers of the New Testament often seem nearly infallible to me at first glance. After all, God used them to be a part of His Holy Scripture!  But when I take a closer look at any of them, I see that God uses people in the midst of their sin and failures.  As Chris said, “the gospel of Mark will remind you that the grace of Jesus Christ is bigger than your failures.” Continue Reading →

Why did it go silent?

Hit the Mute buttonAfter four days of non-stop blogging, you may be wondering what happened? Did our new experiment fail? Have our writers already burned out? Is no one reading this but me??

And the answer is… No. In this last week, there has already been more traffic to the site than in its entire history. One of the posts from this week has already taken the place of “Most popular post of all time at the FBC Blog!” I won’t tell you which – you’ll just have to guess. Continue Reading →

Speak Into Lives Quietly

ThinkingCC image by ngmmemuda on Flickr

Flowing into the mainstream church vernacular in recent years is this phrase: “speak into my life.” It might be used in a context where one might sincerely inquire, “Is anyone speaking into her life?”  It can also appear as an earnest plea from a friend needing direction, exhortation or the like, as in, “Please speak into my life! I need help!”

In light of the Scriptures, the action of having one Christian “speak into” the life of another Christian is pivotal for growth. Continue Reading →

Mirroring – I look too much like my kids!

Reflections on Genesis 33:18-20

Word to the wise:  Don’t fall short on an order given to you by God.

I was recently shopping with my family when one of my kids petitioned for an electronic turntable for our computer, declaring it a “need.” Turntable DJI knew that the entertainment lifetime of this item would be (at best) a day, so I gave a rapid “no.” Despite protests, I stood my ground. I reminded my child of all the new and semi-new gadgets already at our home and, like a good father, emphasized the many reasons there were to be satisfied.  My sweet child’s response?  “I don’t have anything to be happy about!

The response disturbed me, hinting at a deeper heart issue.  As I spent time with the Lord, in the days following the event, it became blatantly obvious:  My children and I are not that much different. Continue Reading →

Marriage: Until Dollars Do Us Part?

Only a couple of hours after I agreed to write a blog on marriage, I logged on to MSN.com to get a quick news update. And there it was…headlined front and center in big bold letters “THE BEST TIME FINANCIALLY TO DIVORCE”.

Oh, that’s special. Really sweetens the image of marriage, doesn’t it? Imagine that spouse-to-spouse conversation: “Oh honey, let’s stay together a few more months. I heard there is a two-for-one coupon being mailed out soon, and the Smith’s are splitting up too!” Continue Reading →
