RMG Life: A Reflection of the Body of Christ

This past week I had the privilege of visiting two separate RMGs with my wife. Both nights we were greatly encouraged by the worship, teaching, discipleship, and fellowship that took place.

Personally speaking, I also appreciated the snacks and refreshments. And, just in case you ever wondered, you can’t go wrong with rice-crispy treats. But, I digress. Continue Reading →

Edwards’ Resolution #18: Living in Light of the Gospel

Do you ever find yourself in a devout frame, with clear notions of the gospel and another world? I know what you’re thinking… who says devout frame? What are you, from the 1700s? No, but a whole lot of people—who are now living in light of the gospel with Christ in heaven—were alive on earth struggling to live in light of the gospel during the 1700s. Many of their words are still encouraging in 2012. I don’t know about you, but I love the encouragement of our brothers and sisters who have gone to be with Christ. I am so thankful for their pursuit of God and the legacy of dependence on Christ they have left. One of my favorite “dead” guys (he will rise again with Christ) is Jonathon Edwards. At just 18 in 1722 Edwards began to pen what have come to be known as the resolutions of Jonathan Edwards. His resolutions have been a consistent source of encouragement in my life. To read what Edwards wrote at the age of 18 stirs a desire to live in such a way that would leave a legacy for Christ.

One of his resolutions, #18,  (“Resolved, to live so at all times, as I think is best in my devout frames, and when I have clearest notions of things of the gospel, and another world”) has stirred my heart over the last year again and again. Continue Reading →

“I Don’t Love Jesus”

It seems rational: why would a 2-year-old love Jesus? Two-year-olds have no understanding of their sin or a need for a Savior, and yet it was still shocking to hear my daughter say, “I don’t love Jesus!”  Immediately, her brother tried to correct her; the passionate pleas of a 4-year-old brother were very precious. I think my initial reaction would have been different had this not been my own daughter, but knowing her heart, I knew it was true. She doesn’t love Jesus, and I think she actually enjoys being naughty and purposefully destructive. In fact, we used to call her “destroyer of the Universe” until she decided she didn’t like the nickname.

So instead of responding with all the great things to love about Jesus (all things she has heard a hundred times in her short life), I PRAISED her. Continue Reading →

Definitive Stewardship

In the mid-eighties, I read a long article by economist James Jackson, PhD.  Jackson, a Christian, gave an excellent perspective on the American economic system.  Though he was—and continues to be—a strong advocate for capitalism, he suggested that for most of us, our high expectations as consumers will never likely be met.

His thesis is that man might create governmental (U.S. Constitutional government–by the people and for the people–rule of law) and economic (capitalism) structures that work for the benefit of greater numbers of a society than other systems.  The challenge, he reminds us, is that sinful men and women oversee and/or transact in these imperfect systems.  Continue Reading →
