Married Life

{mosimage}About a month ago, Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland, started a new blog, entitled "MarriedLife" — their purpose is "to provide our readers with the best ideas we can find about marriage
and family. They will be practical. They will be informed by Scripture.
Our hope is that as you read and apply, these ideas will make an
eternal difference in your life and marriage and extend to your
children and to your church"

They’re not about writing lengthy treatises, but instead give short 4-5 paragraph insights into married life.  Most recently, they’ve been holding a ‘Date Contest’ where people write in ideas, or more typically, actual recent dates.  Many of the ideas are simple, yet quite creative.

I’m guessing that few in our church have found this blog yet, but I think you’ll find it worth checking out…and perhaps will inspire you to make some changes in your marriage for 2006.

Luther on the Manger

Justin Taylor posted a beautiful quote by Martin Luther on the newborn Savior:

If you will have joy, bend yourself down to this place. There you will
find that boy given for you who is your Creator lying in a manger. I
will stay with that boy as he sucks, is washed, and dies…. There is
no joy but in this boy. Take him away and you face the Majesty which
terrifies…

I know of no God but this one in the manger…That
person lying in the manger is both man and God essentially, not
seperated one from the other but as born of a virgin. If you separate
them, the joy is gone. O Thou boy, lying in the manger, thou art truly
God who hast created me, and thou wilt not be wrathful with me because
thou comest to me in this loving way- more loving cannot be imagined."

I.D., Dover & the Judiciary

Al Mohler posted a great analysis today of the recent verdict by Judge Jones in the U.S. District Court of Pennsylvania.  If you’re unaware of the case, the Dover School Board was taken to court for mandating that science teachers read a brief statement about Intelligent Design and evolution prior to teaching evolutionary theory in the classroom.

Mohler’s insights to the trial results are keen and insightful.  Definitely read through the whole article!!

Dec 25, Christmas & the Birth of Christ

{mosimage}Well, Christmas is only six days away, so the question must be considered…why does Christmas take place on Dec. 25?  Why not the 26th?  or even better, July 28?  Obviously the July date would require amending many traditional Christmas songs…

Oh the weather outside’s delightful,
You just gotta take a bite-full,
And since the sun makes us glow,
Let It Show! Let It Show! Let It Show!

And elves in shorts is just not a pretty picture… But apart from the obvious reasons, why has Christmas traditionally been celebrated on December 25?  The most commonly heard answer is that the Christians, once legitmized by the Roman Empire, chose Dec. 25 to supplant idolatrous pagan festivals already occuring.  Gene Veith in World Magazine recently wrote an interesting article that seeks to demolish that myth.  If you want more in-depth details on the actual dating, consider reading through Calculating Christmas by William Tighe in the December 2003 edition of Touchstone Magazine.
