Beautiful Women

As you likely know, Erick & Tasha Cobb shepherd Kaleo — FBC’s College & Career Ministry.  This Tasha sent out an email to the Kaleo women about beauty.  She pointed them to an article Carolyn Mahaney recently wrote on physical beauty, along with an interesting video that’s attached to the article.  Here’s a bit of it:

  • Even if every girl did “feel beautiful just the way she is,” it
    wouldn’t bring her true joy or lasting happiness or solve even one of
    her problems.

  • God did not send Jesus to this earth to die so that women could get
    over their self-esteem problem and feel better about themselves. No, He
    sent his Son to die to rescue us from our sinful, futile quest for
    physical beauty and to reveal to us the satisfaction that comes from
    knowing God—whether we are beautiful or not!

Hollywood & Jesus

It’s not often that upcoming Equipping classes are mentioned, but I wanted to highlight one that starts this coming week (Oct. 15).

John Mitchell will be teaching a four-week class called ‘Hollywood & Jesus.’  It’s going to be focused on how Christians can look different and winsome to the lost by the entertainment choices you make…really focusing on issues on liberty, conscience & wisdom.  This will not be a ‘don’t go to R-rated movies’ type class.  It will be thoughtful, engaging, interactive & instructive.

I genuinely can’t think of someone better suited to teach this class.  John and his wife, Susan, spent time at L’Abri with the late great Francis Schaeffer and both have given serious thought to how a Christian is to impact, transform and be different than their culture.  John is a very gracious, humble man who knows the Word of God quite well.  He is clear, articulate and thoughtful.  I don’t say this to inflate John or praise Him, but to give glory to God who brought just the right man to our church to teach a needed & helpful class.  Trust me that those who go will definitely benefit from and enjoy the class.

If you’d like to attend:
    Cost = Free.
    Length = Four weeks, starting this Sunday
    Time = 8:30-9:40am
    Room = #707  (ask someone if you need help finding it)

    To register = Just show up!  (you don’t have to be a regular attender of FBC to come)

Helps on Eschatology

Justin Taylor recently posted a helpful chart on Eschatological systems made by Mark Vander Pol.  The chart (a pdf file) gives a graphical representation of Classic Dispensationalism, Historic Premillennialism, Postmillennialism and Amillennialism.  It should be noted that the representation of Dispensationalism goes further in certain areas than many dispensationalists might (e.g., the Roman Empire is reborn as the E.U.), but the overviews are generally helpful.

If you’d like to do further reading on eschatology, a very helpful book that uses charts to help describe the different views is Understanding End Times Prophecy by Paul Benware.

Martin Luther

Most people have heard about the 2003 movie, Luther, starring Joseph Fiennes.  It’s worth seeing if you haven’t.  BUT, did you know that there’s also a very well done 1953 movie, Martin Luther, sponsored by the Lutheran church.

It’s available for purchase and about impossible to find as a rental.  However, this week I stumbled across it on Google Video.  If you’ve got the time, definitely watch the old one too!  It’s a bit campy at times, but it presents other facets of Luther’s story that the 2003 version leaves out.  Together, they’ll give you a more full picture of the Reformer.  Oh, and it’s 1 hr, 46 min, so make some popcorn.  (If your web connection is slower, you can download it to your computer & watch it when you’re not online.)

DesiringGod.org remade

{mosimage}You may not have heard, but John Piper’s ministry, Desiring God, redesigned their website and added SIGNIFICANT new content.  What did they do?  Highlights include:

  • Reorganized & expanded the topic index categories, while incorporating all of their resources into it.
  • Put all 25 years of Piper’s sermon audio online, available for free!
  • Began posting sermon videos, dating back three years ago to the present
  • Added a built-in media player that allows you to switch back & forth between audio & video
  • Added an extensive Q&A section, with a number of answers on video
  • Found over 200 missing sermon transcripts and articles, and placed those online

Check out the new site at www.desiringgod.org — it’s a gold mine!
