Economic Stimulus Payment & Christ

Economic StimulusPiper strikes again with this great post on the coming Stimulus Payment checks:

For a moment, forget the political puzzle of getting money back
when the country is nine trillion dollars in debt. The more immediate
question is: How will you make much of Christ with your "economic
stimulus payment"? The president says it will be in the mail in time
for Cinco de Mayo.

Clue: Nobody in the world will see you spend your money on yourself
and conclude that Christ is your treasure. They will assume you are
just like them, no matter how loudly you thank God for this boon. That
doesn’t mean you shouldn’t spend it on yourself (the way we do with
most of what we earn). Not everything we do can look different from the
world—eat, pay utilities, fill up the car, wear clothes (even
thrift-store clothes). And yes, we hope (somehow) that spending on
ourselves in some way contributes to our being more Christ-exalting
people.

But do we really need this money? Very few do. We would have gotten
on fine without it. If we didn’t know it was coming, we wouldn’t even
be feeling the desires we are feeling right now.

May I encourage you to be radically creative and hedonistic. Jesus
said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). And
those crazy Macedonians in a “severe test of affliction” and in
“extreme poverty” had an “abundance of joy” that overflowed in a
“wealth of generosity.” They even begged Paul “for the favor of taking
part in the relief of the saints” (2 Corinthians 8:2-4). They really
believed what Jesus said. Really.

Before the check comes dream of some person or ministry which might
make much of Christ because you treasured him above your next home
project.

The reason God created money and enabled us to earn it is so that we
could show by the way we use it that money is not our treasure, Christ
is. That’s why the checks are coming. So we can make Christ look great.

“Be content with what you have, for he has said,
‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5-6).

Family Travels…

Due to a excessive glut of hotel points and airline miles, Beth, Abby and myself have been away on holiday.  Today concludes our time in the city of John Calvin (and the surrounding area).  We’ve visited the International Museum of the Reformation, the Reformation Wall and St Peter’s Cathedral (where Calvin preached).

We also went to the far side of the lake to see Chateau de Chillon, a beautiful castle set on the edge of Lake Geneva.  Oh, and nearby are chocolate factories!  Yum!!

From here, we stop off in the Alps for a bit and then head up north to see the city of Martin Luther.

Getting Help to Love Jesus More

I wanted to give you a few things that I pray will help you
to love Jesus more ("love much" as it said in Luke
7:36-50
).

The first thing I wanted to do is repeat for you
something I learned from Dick Kauffman at Harbor Presbyterian in
San Diego.  He does a simple Gospel meditation every morning.  He
starts with meditating on his many sins for 5 minutes.  During this time he
focuses on how his sins are personally offensive to God, that it
would be impossible for him to repay God for them and apart from the Gospel he
would certainly be eternally condemned.  After that he spends 5
minutes meditating on the cross, how each individual sin was completely
removed by Jesus suffering and death and that he is completely
forgiven.  Then he spends 5 minutes contemplating Jesus’ resurrection
and his own spiritual resurrection to newness of life.  In this way he
spends 15 minutes or so a day meditating on the Gospel.  Whenever I have
taken up this habit, it has been great for my soul.  Perhaps you will find
it helpful too.

Secondly, I wanted to recommend that you read and
ponder The Centrality of the Gospel (free PDF) by Tim
Keller.  In it Keller says, "All our problems come from a failure to
apply the gospel" and I couldn’t agree more.  This paper is
a great help in applying the Gospel to all of life.  You would
greatly benefit from reading it and then discussing it with your spouse or other friend over food or coffee.

Lastly, I wanted you to consider the analogy of bankruptcy
and how it relates to the Gospel so I posted
it on the Kaleo site
, check it out.

Oh, and here is a
great quote about taking another look at the cross
.

I hope you all find time this week to linger in prayer at
the feet of him who was pierced for your many sins.

Grace and Peace,
Erick

Mexico Ministry – THIS Saturday!

Grace Children’s Home – Mexico Ministry Day Trip – April 26th @ 7:45am

Jake Dietrich @ G.C.H.

Open to families from FBC and sponsored by the leadership of Kaleo.

Where to Meet: Meet off Hwy 79 south, turn right and park at the AM/PM. Extra vehicles can be parked in the carpool parking across the street.

The Plan: Cleaning, picking up trash, construction, laundry, grocery shopping, organizing, playing with the kids, etc.
There is always a list of projects for us to do
while we are there. If we are not working, we are showing the love of
Christ to children who may or may not know him. They have had terrible
experiences in life, much more that I can even imagine. Abuse of all
kinds, abandonment, neglect, and violence. You would never guess this
when meeting them, they are happy, playful and affectionate. Our God is
a God of redemption and they are in that process.
We also are there to minister to the missionaries
that give up so much to be there full-time. They gave up lives of
comfort, with good jobs, homes, and salaries. They gave it up for the
sake of the gospel being spread and being made known to others. Lets
encourage them in their mission and calling that God has placed on us
all. We like to allow them to be able to rest on the day that we come
to help lighten their load for the day. Let’s be a blessing to them.

Contact Jake or Lauren or details.
